The idea of growth lies at the heart of the economies of major Western democracies. Growth, according to many politicians and economists, represents the promise of greater social mobility, higher purchasing power and living standards, and the belief that children will live better lives than their parents. But in an era of ecological and energy challenges, must we—or can we—continue to pursue economic growth ? The question remains largely taboo, as the mere prospect of the end of growth is frightening.

Supporters of degrowth argue that no, growth is not eternal, and moreover, in the current context, it is no longer desirable. But what does this mean for economies that are addicted to growth ? And what might lives built on prosperity without growth look like ?

In this lecture, Vincent Liegey offers an analysis of the end of growth—an end that is as inevitable as it is necessary, as desirable as it is desired. This leads to the concept of degrowth: how to democratically exit the growth-based society in a fair and convivial way, returning to levels that remain within sustainable limits. Finally, Vincent Liegey will share his reflections on the challenges faced by engineers in this context, drawing on his own experiences living according to degrowth principles at Cargonomia, in Hungary.

After the conference, Jean-Christophe will make us dance with a global DJ set inspired by musics of protest and resistance.
