Mortissa – spanish divas

2024-05-30T17:00:00.000Z

Special editions of Veronika Varga's live music education series Hangadó Globál, based on the Greek femme fatale, mortissa, are linked to the temporary exhibition Dívák & Ikonok (Divas & Icons).

The series of concerts will feature songs in Greek, Spanish and Turkish, sunny and spirited, or moonlit and gently emotional, that can fill space with the boundless femininity that mortissa symbolises - anywhere in the world, at any moment in history. The three musical pillars of the series, Greek rebetiko, Spanish flamenco and lyrical songs with a Turkish touch, offer an unprecedented insight into the popular and traditional music of the Mediterranean.

The second musical pillar of the three-part series is Spanish flamenco.

When one thinks of Spain's traditional music, one immediately - if not exclusively - thinks of flamenco, which has conquered the world and provided endless inspiration. This powerful musical and dance genre cannot be left out of the Spanish Divas performance, as it has given and continues to give the world admirable female performers whose voices and movements are truly magical. Subtlety mixed with ferocity, humour with drama, vulnerability with determination - what would a true Spanish destiny woman be like if she were not just like that?!

While flamenco is one of the modern identity shapers and trademarks of Spanish culture, with its associated fiery female figures, it is also a musical phenomenon that colours and completes the picture of Spanish folk music in ways that may be very far removed from our ideas of Spanish music. Flamenco is therefore just one of the traditional musical genres, with its roots in Andalusia and in the soul of the travelling gypsy. In contrast, the quieter moments of the performance give a taste of the sound of a folk song from northern Spain, based on the bagpipe tradition, or a Catalan folk song steeped in Arabic memories.
