One day, San Francisco private detective Sam Spade is hired by a strikingly pretty woman to find her sister, who has been seduced by a violent man named Thursby. At Mrs. Wonderly's request, Spade's partner Archer takes personal charge of the case, but the next day, unexpectedly, both Archer and Thursby are murdered. Spade continues the investigation: Mrs. Wonderly's story turns out to be a lie, and she is part of a criminal syndicate who want to keep the loot for themselves. And the prize is a 16th-century gold hawk with precious stones, donated by the Order of Malta to King Charles V of Spain in 1539...
