A makrancos Kata
László Seregi / Károly Goldmark / Frigyes Hidas
Ballet in two acts
Schedule
Shakespeare's comedy The Lady with the Macaroon has inspired a series of musical stage and film adaptations. Among the ballet adaptations, Maurice Béjart's 1954 choreography to Scarlatti's music, the Czech Vera Untermüllerová's 1961 work to the Czech composer's melodies, and John Cranko's 1969 work to Scarlatti's music are worthy of mention.
This line was continued in 1994 by László Seregi, who chose music by Károly Goldmark for his choreography, and the composer thus became Shakespeare's co-composer (almost 80 years after his death) thanks to Frigyes Hidas' demanding selection. The edited ballet music has the effect of a new unified work, as if the long dead composer had written it for this very choreography.
The macabre Kate is part of László Seregi's Shakespeare cycle, in which he followed the highly successful Romeo and Juliet and A Midsummer Night's Dream. László Seregi was an important figure in the history of the Hungarian National Ballet, with a Renaissance vision of the world, which was evident in these works; but his most important choreographic skill was his outstanding sense of dramaturgy, which translated dramatic works into the language of dance in a clear and entertaining way.
