The great jazz personalities - Wyntos Marsalis
◖ Jazz greats #11 - Wynton Marsalis ◗
There has hardly been a more spectacular career start in the history of jazz in recent decades. Born in New Orleans in 1961, the trumpeter was introduced to the jazz world at the age of 19 in the band of the great discoverer Art Blakey, but a year later he was already demonstrating his extraordinary abilities in Herbie Hancock's quartet.
Schedule
CBS released his first album in 1982, followed by successive releases. The debut album was voted Album of the Year by readers of Down Beat magazine, and critics and jazz lovers alike agreed that he was the new king of the trumpet, the first musician to win Grammy Awards in both the classical and jazz categories.
Marsalis's career was accompanied from the outset by a distinguished publicity that contributed to the renaissance of acoustic jazz. Critical opinion was divided between two extremes: some considered him an outstanding musician, others echoed the music of Miles Davis in the 1960s. In any case, the trumpeter has become a major figure on the American jazz scene, and as artistic director of Jazz at Lincoln Center, he plays an important role in preserving the jazz tradition.
Gábor Turi's Jazz Free Seminar series on jazz greats will introduce you to the wide-ranging work of Wynton Marsalis.
