SVETLOST, The Platypus

2024-12-07T19:00:00.000Z

Formed in 2014, Svetlost is an ensemble from Skopje made up of three central figures from the rich jazz scene of Macedonia. Their music is characterized by an energetic, tight and intricate rhythm section provided by Kristijan Novkovski on drums and Deni Omeragić on bass, which creates a dynamic backdrop for the passionate, melodic phrases of Ninoslav Spirovski's clarinet and saxophone, resulting in a sound that is heavy and elegant at the same time, featuring elements of dark, doomy, punky, modal and psychedelic forms of jazz.

The trio's latest album ‘Everything Was as It Had Been a Minute Ago’, co-published this year by PMGJazz and Inverted Spectrum Records, was deeply inspired by experiences of personal loss and everyday social struggles and constitutes the trio’s most profound creation to date. The recording, like their previous release which captured them in their 11-piece orchestral form, was featured by Bandcamp Daily among “the most notable jazz releases of the month”.

THE PLATYPUS:

Invoking the mystical universe of John Zorn and the epoch-making genre of the late The Best Bad Trip, just a few months ago, another young star was born in the chaotic galaxy of oriental jazz in Budapest. The Platypus Party is built around an occult mythology that bandleader Viktor Kapusi has been dreaming and building for decades. Now this myth, which we all remember a little bit, seems to be coming to fruition, which the band wants to finally tell the audience in the form of sacred rituals.
