MAO Legendary Albums | Thelonious Monk: Genius of Modern Music
2025-09-09T18:00:00.000Z
This album is a milestone in jazz history and in the life of Blue Note Records. Between 1947 and 1952, Thelonious Monk made studio recordings with various ensembles at the head of his own band. First, two smaller vinyl records were released, followed by a compilation album in 1956. Monk was truly an epoch-making genius; his music is sometimes ironic, sometimes lyrical, but always surprising. His melodies are unpredictable, his rhythms unusual, his harmonies groundbreaking – with these, he pointed the way to a new direction in modern jazz. The concert will feature a selection of compositions from the two albums. The program, consisting of quintet and sextet pieces, will be led by wind soloists Kornél Fekete-Kovács, Kristóf Bacsó, and János Ávéd. The rhythm section features Gábor Cseke on piano, József Barcza-Horváth on double bass, and László Csízi on drums.

The concert is part of the Blue Note series of the Legendary Albums series. The significance of the Blue Note record label can hardly be overestimated. After 1945, the famous albums with the blue note label recorded the pioneers of bebop and then the defining small ensemble recordings of the hard bop era – these became the eternal pinnacles of jazz. The soloists of the Modern Art Orchestra revisit moments captured on the blue-and-white-labeled records, drawing on recordings from the first great era.
