Nutcracker
A reimagining of the classic fairy tale in the form of a dance show
Gyula Sárközi and his company set the well-known story within the walls of an orphanage. On Christmas afternoon, three siblings — Masa, Mása, and Lujza — sneak out of the institution and watch people on the street as they prepare for the holiday. When the streets grow quiet and everyone has gone home, the angel statues in the small square come to life. Led by the archangel Drosselmeier, they gather the gifts meant for the children in the orphanage and magically conjure a magnificent Christmas tree in the great hall. The angels transform Drosselmeier into a human so that he can warm the heart of the cold-hearted governess and distribute the gifts to the children.
Maja receives a Nutcracker figure, which comes to life in her dream, defeats the Mouse King and his army, and takes her away to the realm of fairy tales.
The production brings the classic story closer to today’s children with charm and inventive new touches.
