Raskolnikov is a poor university student living in difficult circumstances. He divides people into ordinary and extraordinary. According to his theory, the extraordinary have the right to break the law, even to shed blood, if it helps the world progress. He counts himself among the extraordinary and explains that those who pity their victims must suffer, that great intellect and deep feeling demand pain, and that truly great people carry great suffering in this world. His theory, of course, is full of logical and moral flaws. Raskolnikov only realizes this after he has acted on it - after he kills, and must face the consequences.
