Duration: 4 hours 45 minutes with two intermissions

Language: German

Subtitles: Hungarian, English, German

If Richard Wagner had lived in the 20th century, he would have been one of the most brilliant filmmakers – as we might conclude from his Lohengrin: Lohengrin, the mysterious knight and guardian of the Holy Grail, arrives in Antwerp in disguise, in a swan-drawn boat, to rescue the beautiful Elsa, who has been accused of murder. On condition that she does not question his true identity, Lohengrin marries her. After the wedding, however, the manipulations of the defeated Ortrud overcome Elsa's curiosity about her husband's true identity – which is thus revealed. Lohengrin returns to the temple of the Holy Grail...

Wagner's cinematic world is not far removed from OPERA's new production of Lohengrin. Directed by András Almási-Tóth, the setting, inspired by 19th-century romanticism and reminiscent of futuristic steampunk films, presents the irreconcilable contradictions between good and evil, dream and reality, Lohengrin and society's completely opposing worldviews, from which it is practically impossible to emerge victorious – or even happy.
