PHOTO I BRUT – Instinctive photography

The exhibition presents the works of self-taught artists who, over decades, have created original, independent visual worlds that transcend traditional artistic norms. These artists are driven by a kind of inner compulsion to express themselves, their emotions, passions, anxieties, obsessions, likes, and dislikes through visual means, through the medium of photography, thus creating works that approach the essence and pure form of art. The Bruno Decharme collection in Paris consists of aesthetically significant photo brut works whose creators are free from academic influence and the trends and expectations of the art market. The Capa Center's upstairs exhibition spaces are filled with more than 150 such works, which, like most authentic art brut creations, encourage us to rethink what seems obvious in the history of art and photography.

The exhibition is being organized in collaboration with Foto Arsenal Wien in Vienna. A conference related to the exhibition will be held in Budapest in the spring of 2026 as a joint production of the Robert Capa Contemporary Photography Center and Foto Arsenal Wien.
