1937, Szovjetunió. Egy frissen kinevezett ügyész rátalál egy meg nem semmisített levélre, amelyben egy rab a titkosrendőrség korrupcióját leplezi le. Az ügyész megkeresi a levél gulágon raboskodó szerzőjét, az igazság kutatása során azonban egyre nagyobb veszélyben lesz immár az ő élete is.
