In the spring of 1990, a severe famine and a series of crises strike Iraq, yet President Saddam Hussein compels his people to celebrate his birthday with their usual extravagance. Nine-year-old Lamia is given the honor in her class of baking a cake for the president’s birthday. The task, however, proves difficult, as obtaining the basic ingredients is nearly impossible. The determined Lamia thus sets out on a journey through Baghdad to find eggs, flour, and sugar. Accompanied by her pet chicken named Hindi, the naive little girl roams the streets of the capital, where fate brings her into contact with locals of both good and bad intent as she tries to fulfill her absurd mission.
