Cal (Steve Carell), in his 40s, has his ideal life shattered when his wife Emily (Julianne Moore) unexpectedly announces that she is seeing someone and wants a divorce. Suddenly he finds himself very alone, but worst of all, he's forgotten how to date. She tries a local bar, where she meets the womanising Jacob (Ryan Gosling), who, sensing the gravity of the situation, decides to make a man out of her. In the meantime, his daughter Hannah (Emma Stone) falls in love, which puts Cal through another ordeal.
