Sena Dagadu arrived in Hungary 22 years ago and it was exactly 20 years ago that she released her first album, First One, which she premiered on the fat new A38.
Since then, Sena has become an inescapable staple in Hungarian popular music, but she has also toured the world with her countless collaborations. It's no coincidence that Sena's chameleon totem animal features on the envelope of her ominous first album, as she can work wonders with anyone, anywhere, whether it's a frenzied festival crowd or a theatre audience craving Shakespeare's sonnets. Sena's First One album has been released on vinyl in only 100 copies, making it perhaps the most difficult and expensive Hungarian release to obtain at the moment.
To celebrate the anniversary, a repress of First One is being produced by Budabeats Records, which will be available here at the 20th anniversary festival of the Ship, and some of the original band members, Dj Mango, Dj Dermot, Busa, Kemon and musicians from Irie Maffia will be reunited to recreate the legendary 2003 concert with Sena!
A38 Ship
Converted from a coal-mining ship, the A38 is easily Budapest's most unique concert venue. The belly of the ship has been home to a wide range of live and electronic music for almost 20 years, and when it's full you can feel the rhythmic movement of the partygoers making waves in the Danube. Foreign acts often refer to it afterwards as their favourite club.
