Attila Stark's paintings, with their entirely new themes, still retain the comic-book vision; the bright, clear-coloured, stylised figures carry the unmistakably bumfordian, playful world of their creator. The graphic painting style he has been known for since KuloCity is echoed in his latest 'bucolic' paintings, which feature the characters and locations of Stark's passion for nature walks, which has been going strong for nearly a decade. Fabulous transcriptions of plants, fungi and animals collected scientifically during his walks in the woods and catalogued on a dedicated Instagram page populate his paintings, as do the monkeys and dogs that have previously been ubiquitous. But the difference soon becomes apparent. Whereas in the earlier paintings the space and proportions shift arbitrarily and appear like graffiti in a single image, the more recent forest landscapes, with their uniform proportions, are interpreted as real landscapes, however fabulously. When and in what form the two worlds can meet in Stark's work is answered in this major solo exhibition.
