Sun Kil Moon, Amoeba

Sun Kil Moon, aka Mark Kozelek, is one of the most important songwriter-performers of the last 30 years. His first major group, the Red House Painters, was already considered one of the best alternative guitar bands of the 1990s, and his more folky, indie-folk albums, released solo or with bandmates under the name Sun Kil Moon (or his own), are also masterpieces, so it was a great pleasure to see him perform at the House of Music in 2022, and especially to see him give a memorable concert.

During the show, he was accompanied on piano by Amoeba's keyboardist Bencze Molnár on a few songs, and playing together led to a joint recording with Molnár's band, Amoeba, a pioneer on the Hungarian soulfunk-hyphop scene. They first worked on songs together after the concert, then in the spring of 2023 and later, some of which have already been released, but now a whole album will be released together, and this concert will be the album launch.

Schedule

◖ Sun Kil Moon ◗

Mark Kozelek's songs have changed a lot in thirty years, but the essence has hardly changed: strongly autobiographical compositions performed at a slow tempo but with magnetic effect; song structures that push the boundaries of the rock (or alternative, indie-rock) and acoustic singer-songwriter genres from the start; and themes that shift the personal towards the universal. The singer-guitarist returned to performing at the House of Music in 2022 after a two-year hiatus, where he developed such a chemistry with the Hungarian musicians that the song recordings eventually grew into a full-length album. This will be released during the concert and will be presented together this evening, but - as well as a long concert - the new songs will be accompanied by a joint performance of older Kozelek compositions, and the songwriter-performer will also play solo during the evening.

◖ Amoeba ◗

It's hard to define what Amoeba is, but it makes it all the easier to enjoy what they do. It's cross-genre, exuberant, tasteful, deep and light at the same time. The production has been around for 14 years and is without exaggeration one of the most exciting bands in the country. Funk, soul, brokenbeat and hiphop traditions have been the foundation of their beginnings, and with their second album they have set their sights on the world of disco. Their eclectic sound is elusive but all the more fun. Its members are highly experienced musicians who have forever etched their names in the musical history of Budapest nightlife with their various projects.
