Keeping the blues alive (Taste, Ten Years After, Free, UK, 60s)
The British rhythm and blues boom of the early sixties was followed by another major wave at the end of the decade. The as yet unknown Irish band Taste had just made their debut at Cream's farewell concert (November 1968), but it was also the heyday of Nottingham's Ten Years After, who blended blues with rock and roll; Fleetwood Mac, known to most as the pop stars of the 1970s; and the two bands with essentially one dominant personality, Savoy Brown and Chicken Shack, who had ever-changing line-ups and longer careers. And then there is the second British blues wave, including Free, one of the most successful rock bands of the turn of the sixties and seventies.

Free Rock and Roll Conference
A series of rock history lectures from the blues through Elvis to the twilight of the sixties A permanent programme, Rock and Roll Free University, was launched at the MZH Multimedia Library and Club in 2022. The Rock and Roll Free University will present the most important processes and artists in international pop history. Rock and roll is the result, in a somewhat simplistic way, of a particular cultural-historical marriage: when the musical traditions of black slaves (blues) brought over from Africa and white settlers (country) from Europe met and mixed in a third continent, the Americas. Moreover, all this was taking place in a radically transforming society, following technological progress and the associated industrialisation and urbanisation. In the sixth season of this series (Autumn 2024), we look at the social, cultural and musical events of the second half of the 1960s in the UK.
