The members of Rasmus gave their first concert in 1994 in a high school in Helsinki. They started playing music at the age of 16 to bring fresh blood into the Scandinavian music scene. Their first album, Peep, released in 1996, went gold in Finland within a relatively short time.

The band toured constantly, playing over 100 gigs a year, before going back into the studio to record their second album, Playboys. After another gold album, they were a real success: in 1997 they won the Emma Award, known as the "Finnish Grammy", in the category for the best new band.

This professional recognition has allowed The Rasmus to open for bands such as Rancid, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Garbage on their home turf.

In 1999, Janne was replaced by Aki. They released their third album, Hellofatester, and the song Liquid was voted song of the year by fans and critics alike.

The real breakthrough came in 2001, when they signed with Swedish label Playground Music Scandinavia and their song F-F-F-F-Falling became a hit in Sweden.

A few months later they released their fourth album Into, which went double platinum in sales. Thanks to this success, Rasmus was ready for an international career; they toured several European countries as support acts for HIM and Roxette.

They toured Italy with the Spanish rock band Dover, while receiving invitations from all over Europe.

They came home with 4 awards at the 2001 Emma Awards.

By 2005, Dead Letters had become known throughout Europe. Their sixth album, Hide from the Sun, was released on 12 September 2005. Black Roses was released on 24 September 2008 and their latest album, The Rasmus, was released in April 2012.

In 2022, the band represented Finland at the Eurovision Song Contest with their song Jezebel. After advancing from the second semi-final, they finished 21st in the final.
