Schedule
This time, the orchestra's guest will be Burcu Karadağ from Istanbul, an accomplished ney flute player who works with both classical and jazz musicians. In recent years, Hans Lüdemann has spent extended periods as artist-in-residence in Istanbul, and as a result they have developed a duo repertoire that includes original compositions as well as arrangements of works by oriental composers.
The ney flute is a key instrument in oriental and Turkish music, and is radically different from the flute we are used to. It requires much more air to be played, thus expanding the space between the notes and directing the listener's attention towards spiritual dimensions. For the Oriental Express, Hans Lüdemann has condensed his experiences in Istanbul into pieces that bring out the full magic of the ney. The music will be recorded in the days before the concert and will be released by BMC Records.
The seven-year On the Edges series is scheduled to tour to five regions inside and outside the European Union. The members of the TransEuropeExpress Ensemble and invited guest artists will draw creative energy from the interplay and fusion of their musical mother tongues to paint a colourful, richly layered picture of European jazz, while making palpable the clash of musical elements and cultures. The previous three in the series were released by BMC Records: the critically acclaimed Maghreb Express with Majid Bekkas, Polar Express with Kalle Kalima and Sofia Jernberg, and most recently Roman Express with Rita Marcotulli and Luciano Biondini, which was nominated for the prestigious Deutscher Jazzpreis this year.
