One-act operas in Hungarian, with Hungarian and English subtitles

Length of performance: 2 hours 30 minutes, with 1 intermission.

How far should we let someone into our mind, our soul, our past? And what happens if someone enters our mind even though we would have let them in? The world-famous opera by Béla Bartók and Béla Balázs gives us an insight into the different layers and stages of the relationship between men and women, while the work by János Vajda, based on the famous novel by Mann, shows the effects of blind extremism and mass hypnosis. Two brilliant 20th-century Hungarian one-act plays in one evening about the depths of the human soul and psyche, how it works and how it can be influenced.

János Vajda: Mario and the Wizard

"You do what you want. Or have you ever not done what you wanted to do? Or have you ever done what you didn't want to do?"

Remembering Torre di Venere has an unpleasant air. Against their will, the audience of an Italian holiday resort town falls under the influence of a strange magician - except for one man.

"Tolerance is a sin if it means tolerating evil." - said Thomas Mann, whose influential narrative is the basis for János Vajda's opera of the same name, one of the most successful and influential works in modern Hungarian opera history. The work is directed by Péter Galambos and performed at the Opera House.

Béla Bartók: The Bluebearded Prince's Castle

In Bartók's only opera, through seven symbolic doors, we gain an insight into the secrets of the human soul: the enigmatic work traces the development of the relationship between two people, the stages of mutual recognition and estrangement, in a parable-like manner, in a blaze of symbols with multiple meanings, suggesting all the while that it is not the drama of a man and a woman that is unfolding before our eyes, but that of a man and a woman. "The deeper they go into the realisation of their own demons, the more they become disoriented. Yet their curiosity outweighs their fears. Confronting our demons, however painful, leads us to know ourselves," said director Péter Galambos at the time of the 2013 premiere.
