In a seemingly peaceful and quiet small town, young Jeffrey Beaumont arrives. Walking through a field, he finds a severed human ear. He takes it to the police, but no one there has reported the missing ear. Jeff goes to the bar, where he is captivated by the singer's voice and beauty. It turns out that Dorothy is having a bizarre affair with Frank, a self-righteous local potentate. The evil man, who terrorises the town with his men, has kidnapped her baby son. So he blackmails her into granting his every wish. Jeff and well-meaning Sandy want to help Dorothy. A nightmarish adventure begins...

20:30 - MULHOLLAND DRIVE - THE ROAD TO DARKNESS

(in English with Hungarian subtitles)

colour, subtitled, American film, 146', 2001

directed by David Lynch

starring Naomi Watts, Laura Harring

***Not recommended for children under 16 years of age.***

Boasting one of the most terrifying jump scares of the millennium, this film is not horror, but what it is, even David Lynch may not know. All we know for sure is that it has two(?) women, a red curtain, some Hollywood, a dash of lesbian action and a horrifyingly tragic vocal performance. And if you concentrate hard enough, when the film box opens, you might just see the answer to that big question.

23:30 - ERASER HEAD

(Eraserhead | in English with Hungarian subtitles)

black and white, subtitled, American film, 90', 1977

directed by David Lynch

starring Jack Nance, Allen Joseph

Henry lives in a squalid apartment in a run-down industrial neighborhood. The reclusive young man is involved in an extreme relationship with a hysterical girl. When he learns that Mary is pregnant, he agrees to marry the girl who moves in with him. Soon their baby is born, a hideous-looking, ear-splittingly crying mutant, reptilian creature. Henry escapes from the harsh reality into the realm of fantasy...

Location

Bem Cinema

In January 2016, the 108-year-old Bem Cinema will reopen its doors to the public, in a new way never seen before in Hungary: as a cinema of cult and classic films (no harm!), or as the educated French say (if you know your English): as a "repertory cinema".
