Szeri Viktor: I Quit Ordinary Dancing

Spontaneous street scenes, bodies moving intuitively to music, and the sometimes destructive forms of joy inspired Viktor Szeri's piece, IQOD: I Quit Ordinary Dancing.

In order to portray the greatest possible enjoyment and the hedonism surrounding dance, Szeri builds on reality. However, the source of joy is not the beauty of the elaborate movements or the linearity of the story: giving up their comfort, not only the artist but also the audience works for catharsis.
Through the relationship between entertainment and amusement, Szeri—questioning his own role—examines what art can offer instead of serving cultural consumption. With his unsettling, slowly undulating scenes, he also points out that although dance is a fundamental part of life, the creation of a stage production isolates and separates us from others. Instead of delighting, his goal is to achieve deep attention, from which dance unfolds as a sensual experience.
