Stand Up Roma felhívás / Forgács Rudolf: Cigány, de rendes - PREMIER

2026-01-24T19:00:00.000Z

"Rudi doesn't steal. Dani isn't a terrorist. These are shocking facts, given that Rudi is half Gypsy and Dani is half Arab."

Rudolf Forgács is a young comedian from Transylvania who is half Roma and half Székely and recently graduated from the music academy in Cluj-Napoca. He is complemented by Said Dániel, a half-Hungarian, half-Syrian comedian and regular performer at Showder Klub and Dumaszínház, who has lived his entire life in the 8th district.

"So Rudi is a musician gypsy, and Dani lives close to the Musician Gypsies' Park.

Maybe that's why Rudi and Dani like each other. Or maybe it's because they both want to believe that they are 'decent' – whatever that means. (Probably that they don't steal and aren't terrorists.)

Everyone has heard, and perhaps even said, that someone is 'Gypsy, but decent!'. Rudi has heard it too. About himself. These three words, intended as a compliment, reveal a surprising amount about both the individual and society. What effect do these three words have? What does it take to overcome our prejudices, and can we overcome them completely?

The two comedians and the audience can experience the boundaries together: what can be made fun of and what cannot. And for whom? At the end of the performance, everyone can decide for themselves what they think about the Roma they saw on the Trafó stage and whether this changes their opinion of those they have not yet met. (Rudolf Forgács)

The aim of the Stand Up Roma competition, organized by Trafó and Független Színház Magyarország (Independent Theater Hungary), is to provide a space for storytelling from a Roma perspective and to create opportunities for new productions in which creators with Roma ancestry are in decision-making positions. The winning projects—by Rudolf Forgács, Csaba Gerner and Edina Tallér, and Kristóf Horváth's "The Works of Actor Bob"—address the issue of self-representation from different perspectives and experiences. The title of the competition refers, on the one hand, to the genre of "stand-up," which uses humor and (self-)irony to poke fun at prevailing stereotypes and reflect candidly on current social processes, while on the other hand, in its more activist sense, it also explores the possibilities of joint action and advocacy.
