Budapest DARBUKA practice workshop with Dan Franczia - Joyful Drumming + Beginner 1 and Intermediate 2 workshop

Dear Drumming Friends!

The darbuka workshop with Dani Franczia will continue in January at MagBeat Studio in Budapest!

Dani will visit Magbeat on Sunday, January 18, to teach the ins and outs of darbuka playing in two consecutive workshops for fans of Middle Eastern percussion instruments

The workshop, which starts at 11:00 a.m., will focus on beginners (Beginner Level 1). We will start with joyful drumming, a guided joyful music session that introduces participants—both complete beginners and more experienced players—to the world of rhythms and drumming in a lighthearted and playful way. Then we will learn the basic drumming techniques of the darbuka and a few basic rhythms, along with their simpler variations.

The second workshop, Intermediate Level 2, starting at 3:00 p.m., is for more experienced players who have already attended the Beginner Level 3 / Intermediate Level 1 workshop/retreat, play the darbuka regularly, and know and use the basic strokes and rhythms.

Of course, advanced darbuka players are also welcome, as it never hurts to review the basics

Workshop participants will have access to easy-to-read sheet music and videos, which they can use to practice what they learned over the weekend at home.

The day's program:

BEGINNER 1 WORKSHOP - 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

The workshop for beginners starts with the Joy of Drumming program, which introduces participants to the world of darbuka playing in a light and playful way.

The rest of the 3-hour session will be spent playing rhythm technique and rhythm sense development exercises and learning some of the most common Middle Eastern rhythms. Of course, the most important thing is to have fun

No musical training is required to participate, just a good mood, openness, and attentiveness to each other—which always develops quickly from the shared beat of the drums. Join us and experience the exhilarating flow of drumming together!

INTERMEDIATE 2 WORKSHOP - 3:00-6:00 p.m.

The second Intermediate 2 workshop, starting at 3:00 p.m., is for more experienced players who are willing to sacrifice themselves on the altar of practice in order to enrich their playing with more specialized techniques. In this workshop, we will review the basics of the split hand technique and then integrate it into some of the Middle Eastern rhythms we have already learned. We recommend this workshop primarily for those who regularly attend Dani Franczia's various darbuka workshops/retreats, or who have been learning darbuka in other ways for some time, and are familiar with and confident in using basic beats and rhythms. Please bring your own instrument, but we can provide one for the duration of the workshop if required (please indicate your instrument requirement on the registration form at the bottom of the page).

Participants will also receive teaching materials to help them further develop the skills they have practiced at home.
