Ceramics workshop
Create your own painted–drawn–scratched plate while getting acquainted with the sgraffito technique and the basics of ceramics.
In this one-session workshop, we will use the slab-building technique to roll out a surface, shape it into a plate, paint it, and, after some drying, scratch the design into the ceramic bowl using various chisels and other tools suitable for incising.
We will guide you through the entire process, from planning and using the tools to creating the final scratched drawing.

Schedule
How is a scratched drawing made on clay?
Sgraffito is an ancient decorative technique whose name comes from the Italian word sgraffiare, meaning “to scratch.” Its essence is that the still-wet top layer of plaster or paint, applied in a color different from the base, is scraped back to reveal the layer underneath, creating a contrasting image.
To uncover the lower layer and create the pattern, we use a pointed tool (such as a palette knife, chisel, or the handle of a brush). After drying, the piece is coated with a transparent glaze and then fired.
We will glaze and fire the finished works afterward, and you can pick up your completed piece from us at a later date.
The participation fee is 9,500 HUF, and spaces are limited (maximum 10 people).
Date: April 11, 6:00 PM–9:00 PM
Location: Studio 103 — 23 Irinyi József Street, District XI, Budapest
Workshop leader: Blanka Tompa, object designer and member of AMMA Studio
Hi, I’m Blanka Tompa, an object designer, and I currently teach in the Textile Design program at METU. I have always been interested in the connections and overlaps between different creative media, and this is how I found this technique that combines graphic art and ceramics. I learned the basics of ceramics from ceramic artist Judit Fischer, and since last year I have continued developing my practice as a member of AMMA Studio.
All tools and materials will be provided during the workshop.
