There are few more important figures in modern metal than Max Cavalera. The Brazilian frontman's band Sepultura, which he formed with his brother, was one of the biggest black-thrash metal bands of the 1980s and 1990s, and Soulfly, which he formed after leaving the band in 1997, is not far behind. In addition, his incredible amount of contributions and collaborations have made him a central figure in the metal scene of the last twenty years.
Soulfly has picked up somewhere where Cavalera left off with Sepultura: crushing yet liberated, groove-driven, seemingly simple yet heavily inventive, uncompromising thrash. There's plenty of the rawness of punk, the dark downpour of industrial, and all of these influences are woven together with Cavalera's (and his often changing but always excellent musicians') naturalness into the unmistakable Soulfly sound.
Ten albums in almost twenty years, thousands of concerts, co-productions - yet Soulfly never tires. So much so that they recently announced a new album. Archangel, which will be released on 14 August, is out on Nuclear Blast, just like the previous album Savages. And, by the way, we're seeing two Cavalera on stage now, just like in the golden days of Sepultura (or Cavalera Conspiracy). Only this time it's not "little brother" Igor behind the drums, but Max's son Zyon Cavalera, who is famous for, among other things, his fetal heartbeat in the intro to Sepultura's Refuse/Resist - and who, at the age of 17, drummed a cover of the same song for Soulfly's Omen.
So the modern metal stylistic innovator is back in Budapest with a new album, this time at the A38 Ship!

A38 Ship
Converted from a coal-mining ship, the A38 is easily Budapest's most unique concert venue. The belly of the ship has been home to a wide range of live and electronic music for almost 20 years, and when it's full you can feel the rhythmic movement of the partygoers making waves in the Danube. Foreign acts often refer to it afterwards as their favourite club.
