They lived until they died
Where is the oral tradition, where are the unknown authors?
When was the once and where was the where not?
Who were those who lived happily ever after?

Schedule
In the immortal world of folktales, everything is wonderful, unexpected and incredible. The peculiarly closed, constantly self-repeating function of storytelling guarantees both the eternity and the eternal inaccessibility of those who exist within its framework.
The genre of the folktale is defined by the practice of oral transmission of stories, the communal nature of their sharing and reception, and their intimately interwoven relationship with folk tradition. Folk storytelling, when it is not a faithful performance of a written version of a chosen folk tale, always results in the re-creation and rebirth of the chosen tale. This process ensures the organic survival of the genre.
The presence of the folktale tradition can be found in the seemingly most distant corners of culture, beyond its designated field of cultural activity, beyond its intangible boundaries, not only in direct and concrete references or clear inspirational influences, but also in quite abstract forms of expression.
The group exhibition "They lived until they died..." does not undertake or aim to place the genre of the folktale in a historical or theoretical context, nor does it explore its forms and aspects of visual art. The exhibition is the result of a collaboration between the curators and the twenty-two artists they invited to create works in response to the Hungarian folktale. It is a selection of their works, which either directly evoke the imagery and atmosphere of the richly and variedly illustrated folktale collections, or revive their recurring themes and motifs, or relate to them in other, indirect ways.
