What could be better than a light but meaningful morning chat, spiced up with some jazz? Say, if the conversation itself is about jazz. The instruments of Jazzland are the 'tools' of music - the instruments. The instruments are the tools of the trade, and they are the instruments that listeners get to learn about through live music and expert musicians. This semester, teachers and students from the Music Academy's jazz department will tell you about the most common instruments in the genre - all the ones that fit on a tour bus - and more!

SAXOPHONE AND TRUMPET
At the top of the (jazz) score is the saxophone, sometimes with a substitute instrument, most often the clarinet or flute. In jazz, the saxophone, a metal pipe-shaped instrument with a single reed and woodwind, which has been around since the mid-19th century, became popular in the 1920s. It is interesting to note that Zoltán Kodály's Háry János also features a saxophone solo, although despite its exciting new sound, the instrument has been relatively slow to catch on and is still most commonly associated with popular music and jazz. In jazz, from small ensembles to big bands, the trumpet is the most important melody-carrying instrument alongside the saxophone, and one of the oldest instruments in the world. It has been in jazz since the very beginning, since Louis Armstrong, one of the first prominent figures of the genre that started in New Orleans, played the trumpet, and, in addition to being an almost permanent instrument in large jazz ensembles, legendary trumpet players such as Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis and Wynton Marsalis have left their mark on the development of jazz history.
