COME AND SEE!

color, subtitled, Soviet film, 142', 1985

(Igyi i szmotri - in original language with Hungarian subtitles)

directed by: Elem Klimov

starring: Aleksey Kravchenko, Liubomiras Laucevicius, Olga Mironova

A little peasant boy, Flera, finds a rifle and joins the partisans in the middle of World War II. The commander assigns the youngest to the economic section, because he does not suspect that soon those serving here will be subjected to the greatest suffering...

This is not a film that one can watch twice. This is a war film, some scenes of which are indelible from our memory. From the collective memory. This is a war film that should be shown to everyone who threatens to declare war.

Its strength is the child's perspective. It is the suffering of the children that hurts the viewer. Elem Klimov demands a level of identification like no other war film before it. Without any embellishment, without any shade of evil (which of course means the occupying German troops), it shows, raw and for lack of a better word: cruelly, what war is like, what a person becomes in it.

Even if it's just a child.
