He is a visionary, innovator and creator who has defied categorization and embodied everything that is cool. Stanley Nelson's musical documentary provides an insight into the life and career of Miles Davis, based on the music icon's own words and autobiography. It takes its title from Davis's landmark compilation album, released in 1957 and for its highly innovative instrumentation. The portrait of Miles Davis, for whom art meant everything, is revealed from archival footage never seen before and from conversations with friends and co-creators in a personal atmosphere, which debuted at the cult Sundance Film Festival. World-famous musicians such as Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Ron Carter, Jimmy Cobb, Lee Konitz, Carlos Santana or Flea from The Red Hot Chili Peppers testify about him in the film.
Despite all the humiliation he had to suffer from segregation, nothing could stop Davis from making his dream come true and creating a completely new form of musical expression. Together with his colleagues, Davis worked with almost scientific methods to complete the sound and lyricism of jazz through musical experimentation. The impact of their work is still felt today. As the film dives more and more into the tangle of past loves, personal relationships and addictions, Miles Davis, the private man, appears before us: a fearless, captivating personality whose flowing intellectual energies are limited only by his personal insecurities. Thanks to the epic biographical documentary of Stanley Nelson, the director recognized with three Emmy Awards, we can understand one of the greatest modern American artists in unprecedented depth.
