És mi van Tomival? / English subtitles
AND WHAT ABOUT TOMI?
(in Hungarian with English subtitles)
colour, Hungarian film with English subtitles, 100', 2024
directed by: Attila Till
cast: Szabolcs Thuróczy, Tamás Polgár, Eliza Sodró
Not recommended for children under 16 years of age.***
Sanyi (Szabolcs Thuróczy) is a puppeteer and alcoholic. Pali (Tamás Polgár) is an elevator mechanic and alcoholic. Together, they look for their buddy, Tomi, who has already missed several alcoholics meetings. They try to stay sober, which is not easy in a country where drinking is a widely accepted daily practice. Sanyi was abandoned by his wife and daughter five years ago because of his addiction, and since then he has started a new life and does not drink, but a little push is enough for Pali to drink again. Tomi probably doesn't need that anymore. The two friends race against time on the streets of Budapest to find and rescue Tomi.
Attila Till's new film, which is partly based on his own experiences, is just as light, dynamic and embarrassingly funny as his highly successful previous directorial effort. And what about Tomi? at the same time, it is a sight of today's Hungary, a document of the age and a basis for debate. It is a niche work that gives an insight into the lives of addicts, who can provide important support to each other in the most difficult moments.
And what about Tomi? Its touching and exciting story explores themes of friendship, perseverance, and the healing power of community, while providing a glimpse into the everyday challenges of an alcohol-soaked world. The film was produced by the producers of Oscar-winning Son of Saul and privately financed.

Bem Cinema
In January 2016, the 108-year-old Bem Cinema will reopen its doors to the public, in a new way never seen before in Hungary: as a cinema of cult and classic films (no harm!), or as the educated French say (if you know your English): as a "repertory cinema".
