Coltrane Legacy: The 100th Birthday

The six-piece Coltrane Legacy ensemble was founded in 2017 by György Orbán, a double bassist and one of the most sought-after musicians on the Hungarian jazz scene, to mark the 50th anniversary of Coltrane’s death. In the space of barely a decade and a half, from the mid-1950s until his death in 1967, the saxophonist laid new foundations for modern jazz. By delving into increasingly spiritual dimensions throughout his career, he created a musical legacy that has since influenced generations of musicians. György Orbán, an experienced double bassist who has played in numerous ensembles, believed that the best way to honour the saxophonist’s legacy was to form a band whose repertoire included both his own compositions, inspired by Coltrane’s music, and new arrangements of Coltrane’s themes. The compositions, naturally drawing on Coltrane’s traditions whilst developing them further, embody the abstract spirit and musical language of our times, thereby continuing the tradition of spiritual jazz. Coltrane would have turned 100 in September 2026 – at the concert, we can celebrate this anniversary together with the band.
