The Ludwig Museum will celebrate the 30th anniversary of its re-establishment in 2026. Founded in 1989, the institution reopened on 14 December 1996 as the Museum of Contemporary Art. At that time, its international contemporary collection was expanded to include a significant body of Hungarian work: with the support of key economic players of the time and the Ministry of Culture and Public Education, works were acquired for the public collection which have since become important reference points in recent Hungarian art.

To mark its thirtieth anniversary, the Ludwig Museum wishes to rethink this model of collaboration and breathe new life into it in the current context. For the initiative entitled ‘The Next 30’, the museum’s curatorial team has compiled a selection of works by contemporary Hungarian artists, focusing primarily on the period since 2000 and the works of newer generations of artists.

The Ludwig Museum’s collection has been constantly changing and evolving since its foundation; however, acquisitions have not always been able to keep pace with the rapidly changing artistic trends of the past two decades and the emergence of new generations. During this period, numerous works were created that capture the defining issues of our time and important developments in contemporary Hungarian art, yet have not yet found their way into the Ludwig Museum’s international collection. The pop-up exhibition entitled ‘The Next 30’, whilst showcasing the selected works, also raises the question: which works will we use to tell the story of contemporary Hungarian art thirty years from now?
