The name ‘Nothing Causes Anything’ can be interpreted both as a metaphysical reflection and as a sarcastic, demotivating quote. The music of this Austrian quartet, which can be described most succinctly as experimental noise jazz, is similarly two-faced: the main driving force behind their sound is free improvisation, full of twists and turns, friction and moments of harmony that arise unexpectedly. The group was founded by Yvonne Moriel and Vincent Pongrácz, two former winners of the Österreichischer Jazzpreis, Austria’s most prestigious jazz award. Despite their diverse musical backgrounds, the quartet’s members share a common focus, a sensitivity to improvisation and the boldness essential to finding their footing even in the thick of chaos, transforming it time and again into a musical experience never heard before.
