Erkel Theatre
The Erkel Theatre is located in Budapest, in Pope John Paul II Square (formerly Republic Square) in the 8th district.Built in 1911, it was an independent institution until 1951, when it was attached to the Hungarian State Opera House, unable to meet the increased audience demand. It was rebuilt in 1961-62, but closed forty-five years later for technical reasons. Since 1 March 2013 it has been operating again as the chamber theatre of the Opera House. With 2400 seats, it is the largest permanent stone theatre in Hungary.
