The female narrator, the female narrative, is defined by silence, silencing, secondary narrative, and Roma female narrators speak from a doubly subordinate position. The new exhibition at the Bura Károly Gallery is a group presentation of four young women artists who have dealt with their gender and ethnic roots and their interlocking effects in different ways and to different degrees, or who want to escape from this expected role.

Schedule

We live in a society where diversity, inclusion and cultural interconnection are often difficult terrain, with little or stumbling progress, often by merely ticking off the issues involved, rather than by consistently presenting, understanding and working through structural problems. This is also true in the artistic field and institutional system, where contemporary understanding and meaningful representation of women's narratives or non-white identities is not part of the educational system and, despite the apparent polyphony, the different levels and actors of the institutional system give sporadic space to these experiences.

The artists in this exhibition come from different backgrounds and touch on different aspects of the narratives of women and Roma, a common set of narratives that are even more absent from contemporary social and artistic discourses. These attitudes do not exclude the question of how, in a cultural field where this voice is very scarce, a young artist is expected to work with gender or ethnic assumptions, and whether he or she can free him or herself from social and cultural expectations. Can he make that choice."

Kata Oltai, curator

The title of the exhibition was inspired by the master's thesis project of Anita Horváth.

Bura gallery

We define ourselves as a progressive Roma art gallery. In our view, critical art narratives are also part of Roma culture.
