Krisztián Nyáry's latest book brings together two of the most honest places in our home: our pantry and our bookshelf.
Gastronomy is as ancient a theme in literature as love. Through the story of a dish, the best Hungarian writers have been able to tell the story of poverty and wealth, joy and unhappiness. The heroes of Krúdy and Mikszáth's big eaters, Móricz's portraits of poor men, Kosztolányi's female figures devouring meringue, or Attila József's never-been goose-roast are not about ingredients and cooking techniques, but about the essence of man. This book presents Hungarian writers who have said something valid about the world, Hungary or human relations through their depictions of eating, eating habits or cooking. And, of course, most of them also liked to eat in their private lives, or at least to dream of good food.
30 writers, 30 stories and twice as many recipes - in Krisztián Nyáry's usual style.
János Szegő talks to the author.
