Henry Higgins, a professor of linguistics with the manner of a gentleman, makes a bet with his connoisseur colleague, Colonel Pickering, to turn a dirty-looking, neglected florist's daughter, who shrieks in a street language and dialect in an insufferable voice, into an impeccable socialite in a matter of months. Eliza Doolittle, the object of the bet, is in for a 'difficult education', learning not only phonetics but also the rules of gentlemanly behaviour, the basics of culture and the old habits of the day...
George Bernard Shaw's classic play Pygmalion was first performed as a stage musical, then a film version directed by George Cukor was made into a world premiere.
