Paterson is a bus driver in present-day America: he lives in the town of Paterson, New Jersey, where he shares his name. An introvert, he finds quiet happiness in his simple life. Every day is the same: he drives, observes the city, catches snippets of conversation, has a glass of beer in the evening at his regular spot, walks his dog, and writes quiet, philosophical poems in his spare time. His wife Laura is the opposite: impulsive, boisterous, demanding constant change in everything. Every day he has new plans and chases new goals. The two could not be more different, yet they live in a strange harmony.
