Hirajama works in Tokyo, cleaning toilets. He is apparently content with his simple life of harmonious monotony and finds joy in the small miracles of life. He devotes his free time to his passion for music and books, and is also a lover of trees, which he cherishes and constantly photographs. Gradually, through a series of unexpected encounters, more and more of his past is revealed.
Wim Wenders' film premiered in the competition programme of the Cannes Film Festival, where its leading actor, Jakuso Kodoji, was awarded the Best Actor prize. The film also won the Ecumenical Jury Prize.
