William Foster (Michael Douglas), an ordinary clerk, unexpectedly snaps while waiting in a seemingly hopeless traffic jam. Leaving his car behind, he starts walking home. It's his daughter's birthday, which is why it's so important to get home on time. The trouble starts when on his way home, he is blocked by a number of people, and the exasperated man responds to the obstacles with aggression. Soon he's on the run with the police hot on his trail, and only Detective Prendergast (Robert Duvall) suspects what may be behind the rampage.
