After a successful drug deal, Wyatt and Billy get on a motorbike and head for America. With no particular destination in mind, they head from Los Angeles to New Orleans. The two "born to be wild" hippies are not welcomed anywhere and end up in jail in a small town. There they meet an alcoholic lawyer who is also a pariah in the local community. After their release, George joins them.
Dennis Hopper's road movie has been a cult film for exactly 50 years. It's a must-see and a must-see. The psychedelic montage of the cemetery scene, along with the relevant sequence from Antonioni's Zabriskie Point, has become an emblem of the counterculture. In 1969, this is what the American Dream looked like from the runway.
