Jesse (Ethan Hawke), an American boy, and Celine (Julie Delpy), a French graduate student, meet on a train from Budapest to Vienna. The two young people have a pleasant chat during the journey, which leads to him asking her to accompany him on a night out in Vienna. Celine agrees and the two young people spend the few hours that remain until morning together. Their relationship eventually culminates in an overwhelming love affair, only to part at sunrise.

They spend this time walking and talking, discovering if they still have feelings for each other despite the changes in their lives.
