Late Gothic winged altars
The late medieval wooden sculptures, panel paintings, winged altars and winged altar fragments from the collection of the Hungarian National Gallery will be transferred to the Museum of Fine Arts after restoration. The ensemble is one of the most important of its kind in Europe, both in terms of the number of altars and their artistic quality.
Schedule
Most of the artefacts date from the early 16th century. The collection also includes several altar retables that originally stood in the same church: two altars from the parish churches of Leibic and Nagyszalok in Spiš, two altars from the parish church of Liptovszentandrás in Liptov, and the high altar from the parish church of Sibiu, as well as the altars of the Angel of Salutation and St. Anne in the same church. The main altar in Sibiu was one of the largest altar retables in the medieval Kingdom of Hungary. One of the most important pieces in the collection is the Visitation Tablet of the former altar of Master MS (Marten Swarcz) in Selmecbánya.
Hungarian National Gallery
The Hungarian National Gallery is the largest public collection documenting and presenting fine art in Hungary. The permanent exhibitions of the museum, located in the Buda Castle Palace complex, showcase the most important works of Hungarian art, including masterpieces by Master MS, Pál Szinyei Merse, Mihály Munkácsy, József Rippl-Rónai and Dóra Maurer.
