A hattyúk tava

Tchaikovsky's first ballet is perhaps the most beloved classical work in ballet literature: the love affair between a prince forced to marry and a girl transformed into a swan is one of the most beautiful Russian romantic tales.

But it was a failure at its premiere in 1877. The premiere choreographers simply could not match Tchaikovsky's genius. The work became world famous in 1895 with the choreography of Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov, and most companies still dance the piece to this day. This classic work was adapted by Rudi van Dantzig and Toer van Schayk in 1988. Odette and Odile, the pure, innocent white swan and the seductive, manipulative black swan, are played by the same dancer.
