E.T.A. Hoffmann's name is certainly associated with The Nutcracker, so it is perhaps less well known that the Coppélia story was based on his short story The Sandman. The author, who had a reputation as a polymath, was himself involved in the construction of various devices and automatons, and he knew that it is not difficult to fall in love with your own creation. The ballet version of Coppélia was first performed in Hungary in 1877, and in 1953 it was adapted by Gyula Harangozó. More than 70 years later, on the 50th anniversary of the choreographer's death, the Hungarian National Ballet is staging the work again, in which classical ballet, pantomime and magic tricks go hand in hand, as do the late romantic melodies of Léo Delibes and the Hungarian Csárdás.

Hungarian State Opera
The Hungarian State Opera House is the only theatre in Hungary with a large company, specialising in operas and ballets. The building is one of Budapest's most important 19th century monuments. It was built in neo-Renaissance style according to the plans of Miklós Ybl. The richly decorated interior was designed by renowned Hungarian artists, including Mór Than, Károly Lotz and Bertalan Székely.
