Trish (Cynthia Stevenson) is happily married to her psychiatrist husband (Dylan Baker) and their three children. The husband secretly has a crush on young boys, her son has a fling with an 11-year-old classmate, fantasises about a mass murder spree and masturbates with teen magazines. One of her husband's patients (Philip Seymour Hoffman, who is a big hit in this role) harasses people with obscene phone calls and tries to seduce Trish's sister (Lara Flynn Boyle). Meanwhile, Trish's parents' (Ben Gazzara, Louise Lasser) happy marriage of 40 years is falling apart and she's fed up with the Florida slum life.
Screaming with happiness stepped on the toes of many a hen's eye as she presented viewers with people struggling with the limitations of their conventional lives, giving in to their perverse sexual urges in an attempt to find happiness. Thanks to the scandal, the hit film, which became a hit in the arthouse cinema, presented its far from flawless heroes without passing judgement, to the disgust of some viewers.
