Musical dictionary: oratorio
The Music Dictionary is a new series in the first semester of the SoundGiver Senior. We look at the most popular genres in music history. We started with the concerto and continued with the suite, this time we'll look at the oratorio. The genre also took its present form in the Baroque period, but the mystery play, already known in antiquity and the Middle Ages, had a somewhat similar character. It has been a favourite genre in great musical eras and great composers have written oratorios right up to the present day. What are the most popular works? What is the secret of the genre's success? This afternoon we will find out.

We come to the third in our series of oratorios in our new music season. The aim of Music Dictionary is to explore the characteristics of popular musical genres and examine where they have developed from and to over the centuries. The first entry in this dictionary was the concerto, followed by the suite. Now we focus on the oratorio. It started as a musical mystery play in the past, but what has it evolved into over the centuries? Who shaped the structure and its characteristics, and in what direction, filling it with more and more beautiful music? Let's take a little journey through music history again, and this time we will discover many interesting facts. And the audience can spend a pleasant Wednesday afternoon listening to music, singing and playing quizzes. The good mood and interesting stories will be provided by Dóra Tápai, choirmaster, secondary school singing and music teacher, and music teacher of the Hungarian House of Music.
