The diverse centre of a peaceful and prosperous microcosm of Anatolian Greece until the first third of the 19th century, Smyrna remains an important symbol of Greek cultural memory and identity to this day. Through songs and true stories written in the 1920s and 1930s, recalling the memories of real people, we are taken on a journey through time, guided by the singing and storytelling of Veronika Varga. And to follow in the authentic footsteps of the culture of Asia Minor Greeks, the songs will be accompanied by the iconic instruments of the Anatolian peoples: Sofia Labropoulou, a renowned artist of the kanoun, an instrument that embodies the sense of life of the entire Middle East and Mediterranean, and Tamás Smuk, a renowned Hungarian player of oriental percussion instruments, will join Veronika Varga on stage.

Schedule

Anatolia, also known as Asia Minor, is a peninsula that has been the place of the heyday and decline of many peoples and cultures throughout history, including a special core of Greekness. The diverse centre of a peaceful and prosperous microcosm of the Anatolian Greeks until the first third of the 19th century, Smyrna remains an important symbol of Greek cultural memory and identity to this day, and its stories and music occupy a particularly significant place in the hearts of Greeks - and indeed, the whole world. The everyday life and destiny of the people of Anatolia are reflected in true stories and deeply emotional songs of a culture that has flourished beyond compare, whose personal tone almost makes us feel as if we ourselves had lived in that land of great beauty, which has grown so many treasures and then, like a paradise lost, has produced so many sorrows.
